Underworld to Release Olympic Ceremony Music
British electronic duo Underworld serve as music directors for the Olympics Opening Ceremony on July 27 in London. Music from the ceremony, including new music from Underworld, will be released on iTunes just following the completion of the event, at midnight on July 28.
Titled Isle of Wonder: Music for the Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games, the record will also be released physically on August 6 via Decca/Universal. According to a press release, the entire opening ceremony was inspired by Caliban's dream in The Tempest. Director Danny Boyle, who uses Underworld's music frequently in his films, is the Opening Ceremony's artistic director.
The Closing Ceremony's music will also be released as an album, titled A Symphony of British Music - Music for the Closing Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games. It's out digitally August 12.
The Chemical Brothers have also created a piece of music for the Olympic Games, to soundtrack six days of cycling events. The song is titled "Theme for Velodrome" and available to check out below, via The Guardian. Of the piece, the duo's Tom Rowlands told The Guardian, "I have always made a connection between electronic music and cycling repetition, the freedom and sense of movement."
